The Jewish Film Festival Zagreb Association is a non-profit organization that has from its very beginnings in 2008 recognized the need to offer additional enriched features to culture and the outer-institutional education of citizens. It is the aim of the Association to speak out about the necessity of understanding the different, tolerance, love – that is why each May for the past six years has been reserved for the organization of the Zagreb Jewish Film Festival, i.e. in 2013 – the Festival of Tolerance.
Through this cinematic and cultural manifestation and all its program segments, we promote multicultural dialogue and educate the public about the atrocities of the Holocaust, from whose history and experience we must draw lessons, identify and single out today’s social problems, and entice the development of tolerance and shared values as the foundation for a peaceful coexistence of various ethnic and religious communities.
Led by the Honorary President of the Festival, Mr. Branko Lustig, a survivor of the Holocaust and two-time Academy Award winner, we speak out and warn about the atrocities that took place during the Holocaust, reminding the public that there is still not enough interest and tolerance to put an end to the horrors of genocide and war.
In May 2013 City of Zagreb will host the 7th Jewish Film Festival under the title THE FESTIVAL OF TOLERANCE. Short editions of the Festival is prepared for the City of Rijeka.
For the first time the Festival in Zagreb will take place at the two locations: the Europa Cinema and the Grič Cinema from 19th to 25th May 2013. During the following week, from 07th to 09th June 2013 we plan to organize the Festival in cooperation with the City of Rijeka at the Art-kino Croatia and at the premises of Mali Salon Gallery. Both cities will host the selected parts of the film program and Educational mornings.
The theme of the Festival will be a kind of follow-up to the 6th edition, focusing on tolerance, its meaning in the context of suffering and life struggle but also in the context of peaceful coexistence in its broadest sense. More than fifty films of Croatian and foreign production, in the cathegories of feature, documentary and short films, will be shown on the big screens at the Europa and Grič Cinema in Zagreb during the seven days of the Festival. In Rijeka, the Festival plans to present about twenty selected films that talk about the necessity to respect the different, intending to leave a memorable impression on the viewers and motivate them to contemplate about ethically correct social engagement. The selected film program is mostly composed of renowned films awarded by international festivals. All films shown at the Festival are translated in English and Croatian which makes them available to a large number of viewers from abroad. Film projections make the central part of the program and, as it has been done every year, the audience will have the opportunity to vote for the best and the most impressive film. The audience will also get the opportunity to discuss films with the filmmakers after projections. Aiming to attract the largest possible audience and make the festival program available to all age and social groups, tickets for the film projections will be free of charge.
With the Festival of Tolerance, Zagreb’s and Croatia’s cultural programs became richer for another important event that found its place on the prosperous festival scene and developed into a recognizable and unavoidable cultural event. The fact that the Festival will travel to Rijeka represents an extraordinary step forward for the cultural and institutional cooperation in the region. This unique festival hosted in Zagreb and Croatia is the only film festival in the world focusing on the education of the young, particularly underlying the importance of conveying the truth about the Holocaust, developing tolerance, understanding differences and every individual’s right to life. With its repeated guest editions, held in Rijeka, the Festival will improve the harmonization of the regional initiatives participating in the realization of the program.
BRANKO LUSTIG
(Osijek, 1932.) Honorary president of the Festival
Branko Lustig is the most famous cultural ambassador of the Republic of Croatia and a worldwide awarded producer (Oscars for Schindler’s List and The Gladiator). For many years he has been active in Hollywood where he participates in the work of the Academy as a member of its Oscar award nomination committee. He started his career as the Head of Photography in Jadran Film where he participated in almost all foreign film productions at the territory of the former Yugoslavia as the main organizer and film director. In America he worked closely with distinguished directors such as Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott and others. In June 2009, he received the honorary doctorate of the University of Zagreb for his exceptional contribution to the art of film and the international promotion of Croatian film. He is a lecturer at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb at the Department of Production. Due to his exceptional expertise, Jewish origin and experience from the most infamous Nazi camps, he possesses immense interest and knowledge about Jewish film. That is why he started volunteering at the Zagreb Jewish Film Festival as the Festival’s President. He regularly expands his role of the Festival President by giving lectures about the Holocaust to students across Croatia.
NATAŠA POPOVIĆ
(Zagreb, 1974), Festival Director
Nataša Popović graduated from the Faculty of Graphic Arts School of Design. For many years she was active in her profession, while she expressed her love for film through the organisation of the Jewish Film Festival. At the initiative and proposal of Vesna Domany Hardy in 2007, she accepted the proposal to launch the first Jewish Film Festival in the region in cooperation with the UK Jewish Film Festival from London. Since 2007, she is fully committed to organizing and developing the film and festival scene in Zagreb and the region.
ANA DOMAŠ
(Zagreb, 1974.) accounting manager
She studied at the University of Negev in Israel in the field – technician for film and television and in 1998, upon returning to Zagreb, she got involved as a cameraman in the project of the Foundation for Visual History – Surviving Witnesses of the Holocaust, whose center is in Los Angeles. From 2003 to 2010 she lived and worked in London in the field of management. In 2011, back in Croatia, she started working as an associate on various film festivals such as: Jewish Film Festival, Festival of Perforations, IETM (International Network for Contemporary Performing Arts), Zagreb Dox – Documentary Film Festival, Queer Zagreb and Motovun Film Festival. After working as a head of marketing in Domino (Queer Zagreb), she took on the role of accounting manager at the Festival of Tolerance – Jewish Film Festival.

LUKA RINČIĆ
(Zagreb, 1982), Education Program Coordinator
After graduating from high school he enrolled at the Faculty of Political Sciences which he graduated from in 2006. He started his career in GONG, a non-profit NGO. Since 2009, he has been working as a journalist in Poslovni dnevnik newspaper. He joined the Festival of Contemporary Jewish Film Association in 2011 as the Educational Mornings Coordinator. He successfully organized four Educational mornings in Zagreb and two tours around Croatian cities (Čakovec, Osijek, Vukovar, Zadar, Knin).

STAŠA ČELAN
(Split, 1969.)
Staša became actively involved in the organization of the International Talent Workshop in 2010 when he became the head of the project. For fifteen years now he has been active in Kinoklub Zagreb as a lecturer in film workshops and a mentor to young filmmakers. He has been organizing film workshops across Croatia mostly within the work of the Croatian Film Association, Croatian Education and Teacher Training Agency, Dubrava Cultural Club and the already mentioned Kinoklub Zagreb. From the beginning of his career up to now he held over a hundred film workshops. Together with Irena Marković he founded a young film production company Focusmedia, which primarily deals with the production of independent films.
