FROM THE BLACK YOU MAKE COLOR

Tel Aviv’s oldest beauty academy draws an eclectic mix of Jews and Arabs, locals and foreigners, immigrants and natives. They speak Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, English, Amharic, Bantu and Vietnamese, yet somehow find a common language here. This documentary follows eight women from the fringes of Israeli society at this quirky meeting ground of cultures and ethnicities. Among comb sand hair dye, these women present a microcosm of modern-day Tel Aviv. Their personal, often heart-rending, stories come to light as they discover a safe haven here from the pressures of the outside world. It’s a place where women find strength and empower one another, and where beauty becomes a metaphor for much more.
